Deep Relaxation and Healing Movements
taught
by Thu Nguyen
6 Wednesdays, 7:30-9:00 pm
June 7 - July 19, 2006 (no class on June 14)
"The
capacity to relax is at the very foundation of any program undertaken to
overcome anxiety, phobias, or panic attacks... Regular practice of deep
relaxation for 20-30 minutes on a daily basis can produce, over time, a generalization
of relaxation to the rest of your life. That is, after several weeks of
practicing deep relaxation once per day, you will tend to feel more relaxed all
the time."
from
The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne, Ph.D.
"Qigong
is an ancient Chinese system of exercise and meditation that makes the mind and
spirit tranquil, improves performance in sports, cultivates health, well-being,
and long life... Through qigong, spiritual seekers learn to unify the qi (life
force) within their bodies with the spirit and energy of the universe... Qigong
also increases artistic sensitivity and expressiveness. The qigong practitioner
feels as though Nature uses his or her eyes to see herself. The pine tree
expresses its life, its qi, through the painter's brush or the poet's words. A
great painting, like a great poem, pulses with life energy."
from
The Essential Qigong Training Guide by Ken Cohen
Many people enjoyed this class in the past since it
has helped them to relieve stress, recover their vitality and achieve inner
peace. As the deep relaxation and Qigong exercise are combined together, the
result can be experienced immediately after each session. Each class begins with
30 minutes of deep relaxation, followed by a series of easy-to-learn and
enjoyable Qigong exercises:
- Whole body breathing: to open body and mind
- Cleansing exercises: to cleanse old and
stagnant energies in the body
- Walking meditation and Qigong movements: to
promote energy flows
- Standing meditation: to recharge the body with
new and fresh energy
- Self-massage: to harmonize the energy in the
body.
Please bring a sleeping pad (or a large towel) and a
blanket for the deep relaxation session.
